Modern wood burners are very effective and efficient.  New technologies have been developed to reduce smoke and pollutants that wood-burning appliances produce.  When wood in a stove or fireplace is burning well, you may see nearly transparent flames swirling above the wood in addition to the normal flames coming from the wood.
